- Sixth consecutive year FCA is represented on the US automotive industry title’s prestigious list
- 3.0-litre EcoDiesel in Grand Cherokee produces 184kW and 570Nm, and sips just 7.5L/100km
- Diesel V6 also allows for Grand Cherokee’s towing capacity of 3,500kg
Jeeps 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 has been named one of Wards 10 Best Engines for 2016. It is the third consecutive year the powerful-but-efficient engine has been named to the prestigious list – the longest tenure of any of the 2016 honourees. This also marks the second straight year the EcoDiesel has been the lone representative of diesel technology among Wards 10 Best Engines.
It’s the second impressive accolade for FCA’s EcoDiesel engine in the past four weeks, following the Grand Cherokee Laredo’s win in carsales.com.au’s 2015 Economy Invitational, where, in a series of tests under a variety of driving styles, the Grand Cherokee sipped just 7.7L/100km, only fractionally higher than the vehicle’s 7.5L/100km official fuel figure – ensuring the Grand Cherokee used the least fuel of any vehicle in the carsales.com.au test.
In awarding the win, carsales.com.au judge Greg Leech said: “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo was the car that returned the fuel economy figures closest to those quoted by the manufacturer – a measly 0.2L/100km above the claimed figure.
“At a tested 7.7L/100km the Jeep was remarkably frugal as well, taking the most economical car on test gong. Its size belies its fuel economy, and we really has to rub our eyes and look again when the results were tallied.”
FCA’s powertrain engineers have further improved the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel for 2016, developing additional controls to shape torque demand.
The outcome improves part-throttle performance during rolling pedal tip-in, as well as acceleration from stop. The enhancements ensure even greater control of the engine’s prodigious torque for a driving experience that is smoother and more comfortable.
The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 is available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee - the most-awarded SUV ever – in Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit trim levels.
Commenting on the recent results, FCA Australia President and CEO, Pat Dougherty, said: “A true class-leading engine, FCA’s V6 EcoDiesel offers a perfect blend of performance and efficiency, while also providing Jeep Grand Cherokee owners with an impressive 3.5-tonne towing capacity.”
In the 21-year history of Wards 10 Best Engines, seven engines produced by FCA and its predecessor companies have accounted for 16 awards. FCA’s 5.7-litre V8 and 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 – also available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee - accounted for six and three trophies, respectively.
