Electric vehicle start-up Rivian Automotive has purchased the ex Mitsubishi production facility in Normal, Illinois.
The former Mitsubishi plant is half the size of Tesla’s newly opened Gigafactory and previously employed 3,000 workers before it shut down production in late 2015.
Rivian was founded in 2009 and only has around 100 workers but things are clearly changing for this electric car manufacturer with significant funding from investors now providing a pathway to allow the company to begin full-scale production as early as 2019.
“We couldn’t be more excited to purchase this tremendous facility in the town of Normal,” said the company's CEO, RJ Scaringe.
“This location will be crucial to bringing our products to market, and we look forward to being an active part of this vibrant community.”
Rivian plans to spend US$175m on the Normal site and create 1,000 new jobs.
