MINI Australia has expanded its line=up with the arrival of the all-new MINI 5-door, the second body variant of the new third-generation premium small car.

Longer and taller and sitting on a longer wheelbase than the new MINI 3-door Hatch that was launched in April, the all-new model offers substantially more interior space with seating for five, along with a larger and more versatile luggage area.

With the MINI Cooper 5-door starting at $27,750, pricing for all MINI 5-door models is substantially less than the previous generation MINI 3-door Hatch providing a premium small car lineup that offers more space and versatility, superb driving manners and great value.

MINI Australia general manager Kai Bruesewitz said the longer and taller MINI 5-door provided customers with more interior space and flexibility with no compromises on MINI’s distinctive style or hallmark “go-kart” driving fun.

“With more space for five occupants and their luggage, the new MINI 5-door is the perfect premium small car for the family or those whose lifestyle requires extra interior space and flexibility. At the same time, it maintains MINI’s characteristic contemporary styling, refined performance and sensational driving dynamics.”

With an overall length of 3982mm (Cooper S: 4005mm), width of 1727mm and height of 1425mm, the MINI 5-door is 161mm longer and 11mm taller than the new MINI 3-door Hatch but maintains that car’s compact and powerful appearance with a firm, planted-on-the-road stance.

The bold front end with its trademark circular headlights; a dynamic profile provided by a rising sill line and short front and rear overhangs; and tapered rear window with an integrated hatch-top spoiler all combine to ensure the MINI 5-door maintains a highly distinctive and sporty visage.

Along with the longer body, the new MINI 5-door sits on a 2567mm wheelbase that has been extended by 72mm compared to the MINI 3-door Hatch providing a substantial increase in interior space, particularly in the rear where the 60/40-split bench seat will now seat three passengers.

The higher roof height has added 15mm more headroom, the increased length provides 72mm more rear foot and legroom and although the overall width of the car is the same as the MINI 3-door Hatch, clever design has provided passengers with 61mm more interior width at elbow height.

Like the exterior, the interior design remains faithful to MINI’s “urban cool” aesthetic with its circular motif, contemporary colours and trim materials and three-spoke sports leather multi-function steering wheel.

In addition to the extra passenger space, the larger interior of the MINI 5-door also provides more luggage capacity with greater flexibility in the seating options. With the rear seat back in place, the boot provides a capacity of 278 litres that can be further expanded to 941 litres with the 60/40-split rear seat back folded flat.

The rear seat back can also be placed in a 90-degree position to increase luggage space while the storage package provides a two-part load compartment floor that can be locked in various positions for improved versatility.

As a premium small car, the MINI 5-door is well equipped with the entry-level MINI Cooper featuring air conditioning, dynamic cruise control, electric windows and mirrors, automatic windscreen wipers and lights, audio system with USB and Auxiliary inputs, Bluetooth connectivity, interior LED ambient lights package and rear fog lights.

A step up into the mid-range MINI Cooper D adds automatic dual-zone climate control, Radio MINI Visual Boost with a 6.5-inch central display screen, Extended Bluetooth with audio streaming, front fog lights and a front armest, while the top-of-the-range MINI Cooper S also gains leather/cloth combination upholstery, front sports seats and MINI Navigation System. Along with the upgraded display screen, the Cooper D and Cooper S also feature the MINI Controller – based on BMW’s iDrive system – to manage infotainment, vehicle, communication and where fitted, navigation functions.

All MINI 5-door models feature a very high level of standard safety equipment including six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control with Electronic Differential Lock Control, ABS with Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Cornering Brake Control, and rear Park Distance Control.

At the heart of the new MINI 5-door models is a new generation of engines that provide responsive and refined performance together with advanced technology for economical motoring.

As the sportiest model, the Cooper S features a 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that when mated to the standard slick six-speed manual gearbox, is strong enough to cover 0-100kmh in 6.9 seconds. Opt for the optional six-speed Steptronic Sports Automatic transmission and it’s even quicker by 0.1 of a second.

Incorporating a range of MINIMALISM technologies including auto stop/start, brake energy regeneration and weight and aerodynamic optimisation, all three MINI 5-door models are also very efficient with even the sporty Cooper S Steptronic Sports Automatic delivering a combined fuel consumption of just 5.5l/100km or 6.0l/100km for the manual model.

For even greater efficiency, the mid-range Cooper D is fitted with the latest generation 1.5-litre three-cylinder common-rail direct injection turbo diesel engine, that, with peak outputs of 85kW of power and 270Nm of torque, uses just 3.8l/100km of fuel on the combined cycle test when mated to the manual gearbox.

Powering the entry-level MINI Cooper is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that, thanks to efficient performance-enhancing TwinPower Turbo technology, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double VANOS variable camshaft control, generates maximum outputs of 100kW and 220Nm with a combined fuel consumption figure of 4.9l/100km for the manual version.

MINI has always been renowned for its agile driving dynamics and in the new MINI 5-door it has fully optimised the electro-mechanical Servotronic power steering and proven single-joint spring strut front and multi-link rear suspensions for each model to ensure they deliver a thrilling and exciting drive and supreme ride comfort.

To further enhance the already superb precision and agility of the MINI Cooper S, it is also fitted with the MINI Driving Modes feature that can be optioned on the Cooper and Cooper D models.

This feature offers a choice of three driving modes – MID, SPORT or GREEN, selected via a rotary switch located next to the gear shift lever. MID offers the optimal balance of driving excitement, performance and economy while GREEN enhances efficiency through such functions as intelligent control of energy for auxiliaries and using the coasting mode available in automatic cars.

In SPORT mode, the driver is able to take more advantage of the MINI’s natural handling abilities with greater throttle, steering and automatic transmission responsiveness. Sporty damper settings courtesy of the optional electronic Dynamic Damper Control takes the car’s agility to an even higher level.

Providing a superb balance of traction, handling and ride comfort, the suspension is complemented by a range of light-alloy wheels and tyres with the standard sizes fitted to the Cooper S, Cooper D and Cooper being 17-inch, 16-inch and 15-inch respectively.

Exterior: Longer and taller but unmistakably MINI

The new MINI 5-door is immediately recognisable as part of the MINI family thanks to its characteristic front and rear-end design that maintains the compact and powerful stance of the MINI 3-door.

With the addition of two extra doors providing easy access into the rear passenger space, the MINI 5-door’s unique roof line and rear section draw attention to the car’s 161mm extended length that now stretches to 3982mm (4005mm for the Cooper S). At 1425mm high, the MINI is 11mm taller than the MINI 3-door Hatch and shares that car’s same 1727mm width.

At the front, the entry-level MINI Cooper 5-door and MINI Cooper D 5-door feature trademark MINI styling with a hexagonal grille with a chrome surround and horizontal silver bars; front fog lights for the Cooper D; and circular headlights – with a category-first LED lights option pack for all models that includes headlights, driving lights, fog lights and tail lights.

At the rear, the chrome surround tail lights, integrated roof spoiler and tapered rear window give both models a purposeful finish.

In profile, the extended length further emphasises the striking visual separation of the car’s body and glasshouse with the black wheelarch surrounds housing 15-inch light alloy wheels shod with 175/65 tyres on the MINI Cooper 5-door and 16-inch light alloys with 195/55 rubber for the Cooper D.

Reflecting the sporting prowess of the top-of-the-range MINI Cooper S 5-door, the car is aesthetically distinguished by its black honeycomb grille insert, bonnet scoop, dual chrome exhaust tailpipes and large 17-inch light alloy wheels fitted with low profile 205/45 tyres.

All three models are also available with a wide range of optional wheels and tyres including the classic 18-inch Cone Spoke, that in White, adds a particular funkiness to the car’s “urban cool” styling.

The new MINI 5-door is offered in a choice of 11 vibrant exterior colours with the no cost option of a black or white roof and mirror caps while there is also a vast array of optional accessories, graphics and decals to enable customers to further personalise their car.

Interior: more space, versatility and high level of features

In addition to its increased overall length, the new MINI 5-door sits on a wheelbase of 2567mm - 72mm longer than the MINI 3-door Hatch - that gives the car a substantially larger cabin with the extra 11mm in overall height, adding 15mm of interior headroom.

With a rear seat that accommodates three abreast with ISOFIX child seat anchorage points in the outboard positions, occupants in the back now have an additional 72mm of foot and legroom while a clever design has also increased the width at elbow height by 61mm.

The other big benefit of the larger size is the in the area of luggage space that has increased to 278 litres – 67 litres or over 30 per cent larger than the MINI 3-door Hatch. This can be further expanded with a 60/40-split rear seat back that can be set at a 90-degree angle or folded fully flat to enable a total luggage capacity of 941 litres.

Additional storage is offered by front and rear door pockets and cup-holders – two in the front, and in the rear a central holder able to accommodate a 1.5-litre bottle.

Sharing its dash design and three-spoke, leather-trimmed, multifunction steering wheel with its smaller sibling, the new MINI 5-door maintains MINI’s trademark circular motif with an ergonomic layout with the speedometer, rev counter and fuel gauge located immediately in front of the driver on the steering column.

The large MINI Centre instrument display at the top of the centre stack remains but now provides indicator elements and extended functionality to deliver information on vehicle, infotainment, communication and where fitted, navigation functions.

In the entry-level MINI Cooper 5-door, the MINI Centre instrument display takes the form of a four-line TFT screen with adjacent Auxiliary and USB inputs for connecting media devices. Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free mobile phone use is also standard.

Both the mid-range MINI Cooper D 5-door and range-topping MINI Cooper S 5-door gain further functionality with the Radio MINI Visual Boost system providing a large 6.5-inch colour screen and rotary MINI Controller – similar to BMW iDrive – located on the centre console to allow easy navigation through the various functions.

In conjunction with the MINI Visual Boost display is an LED ring of light surrounding the circular display that provides additional visual information by changing colour for certain functions. For instance, when the Park Distance Control is activated, the ring colour changes from green to yellow then red – supplementing the graphic display - as the vehicle gets closer to objects.

With the Radio MINI Visual Boost system, Bluetooth functionality is also extended to include audio streaming while the Cooper S model gains MINI Navigation System as standard as well.

The infotainment system for all MINI 5-door models can be further upgraded with options including a MINI Navigation System Professional that features a larger 8.8-inch touch screen and 20GB hard drive for audio file storage, digital DAB Tuner and 12-speaker Harman Kardon HiFi audio system.

Complementing the distinctive interior design in the new MINI 5-door is a contemporary range of colour and trim materials.

Standard upholstery for the comfortable and supportive seats in the MINI Cooper and Cooper D models is a dark Cloth Firework with surfaces finished in Hazy Grey and contrasting Black and Piano Black highlights.

Providing both practical benefits and a more sporty aesthetic, the MINI Cooper S features big-bolstered front sports seats with Diamond Carbon Black cloth/leather combination upholstery, interior surfaces and trims in Black Chequered colour and highlights in Piano Black and Dark Silver.

All MINI 5-door models share a high level of standard comfort and convenience equipment befitting the cars’ premium status that includes keyless engine start/stop, dynamic cruise control, electric windows and heated electric exterior mirrors, LED interior ambient lights package, automatic windscreen wipers and lights and rear Park Distance Control.

Ensuring optimal cabin comfort, the MINI Cooper 5-door is fitted with standard air conditioning while the Cooper D and Cooper S feature an automatic dual-zone climate control system.

Powertrain:

latest generation TwinPower Turbo engines deliver superb performance and outstanding efficiency

Providing true MINI sports performance, the MINI Cooper S 5-door is powered by a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine with direct injection, variable geometry turbo, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and double VANOS variable camshaft control that generates a maximum power of 141kW between 4700rpm and 6000rpm and peak torque of 280Nm from a low 1250rpm right through to 4750rpm.

When mated to the standard slick-shifting, six-speed manual gearbox, it enables the car to cover 0-100kmh in 6.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 232kmh.

The Cooper S is also available with an optional smooth, six-speed Steptronic Sports Automatic transmission that offers automatic and sequential manual modes – with gear shifts via the gear selector or steering wheel paddles. In this guise, the Cooper S shaves a further 0.1 seconds off the 0-100kmh time of the manual model with a marginally lower maximum speed of 230kmh.

With a combination of MINIMALISM technologies including auto stop/start, brake energy regeneration, optimised weight and aerodynamics and, for manual models, a gear-shift indicator, all MINI 5-door models deliver superb efficiency.

Although the most powerful model in the range, the MINI Cooper S 5-door still manages to use only 5.5 l/100km of fuel in conjunction with the Steptronic Sports Automatic transmission or 6.0l/100km with the manual gearbox on the combined test with CO2 emmissions of 129g/km and 140g/km respectively.

The mid-range MINI Cooper D 5-door provides the greatest efficiency with its latest generation 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo diesel engine with common-rail direct injection consuming only 3.8 l/100km of diesel with the manual gearbox and 3.9l/100km with the Steptronic Automatic transmission. This low fuel consumption results in emissions of just 99g/km and 104g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle test.

At the same time, the strong torque characteristics of the turbodiesel engine that peaks with 270Nm at 1750rpm, together with a maximum power output of 85kW at 4000rpm, enable the Cooper D to cover 0-100kmh in 9.4 seconds (9.5 auto) and reach a top speed of 201kmh (200kmh auto).

Providing the optimal balance of performance and economy is the MINI Cooper 5-door powered by the latest generation 1.5-litre Twinpower Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection, variable geometry turbo, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and double VANOS variable camshaft control.

Producing a maximum power of 100kW at 4400rpm and peak torque of 220Nm from 1250rpm, when fitted with the standard six-speed manual gearbox it is able to sprint from 0-100kmh in 8.2 seconds with a combined fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km and CO2 emissions of 114g/km.

When mated to the optional Steptronic Automatic transmission, the MINI Cooper 5-door hits 100km from standstill in 8.1 seconds and consumes 5.0l/100km on the combined cycle fuel consumption test producing 116g/km of CO2.

Dynamics: agile, precise handling and go-kart driving fun

Like all MINI models, the new MINI 5-door offers superb agility and handling and true MINI driving fun thanks to its proven single-joint spring strut front and multi-link rear suspension that has been fully optimised for low weight and a high level of rigidity.

This, combined with the rack and pinion Servotronic electro-mechanical steering with its speed-related power assistance, delivers precise handling and superb ride comfort to ensure the MINI 5-door maintains the brand’s renowned “go-kart feeling”.

Additional fine-tuning of the car’s ride, handling and efficiency is provided by the new MINI Driving Modes that is standard on the MINI Cooper S 5-door and optionally available for the Cooper and Cooper D models.

This feature allows the driver to select either GREEN, MID or SPORT modes via a rotary switch next to the gear lever to manage various functions and provide either greater efficiency or more sporty driving manners.

In GREEN mode, the throttle, steering and automatic transmission responses provide a more relaxed and fuel-efficient driving style that is supported by intelligent energy and climate control management. GREEN mode also has the ability to benefit from the coasting mode that automatically decouples the drivetrain at speeds between 50kmh and 160kmh when the driver lifts his or her foot off the accelerator.

MID mode offers the optimum balance of performance and efficiency while in SPORT mode, throttle, steering and transmission settings are adjusted to provide more immediate responses for an enthusiastic and engaging drive.

Even more dynamic sports performance is offered by the optional Dynamic Damper Control that is available for all MINI 5-door models in conjunction with the MINI Driving Modes.

This system adjusts compression and rebound settings for the dampers to provide a greater ride comfort bias or more agile handling, based on the driver’s selection of the MINI Driving Modes.

Providing effective stopping power, the MINI 5-door is fitted with disc brakes all round – ventilated at the front for optimal performance – that are ably assisted by electronic controls including ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control CBC), Fading Brake Support and a brake drying function.

Other standard electronic assistance to ensure stability and safety on the road in all MINI 5-door models includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), hill start assistant and an Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) that acts on the front wheels, selectively braking and directing torque during tight cornering if the driver has chosen the DSC Off mode.

Safety: extensive levels of occupant protection

In addition to the electronic systems that aid driving safety, the MINI 5-door is also extensively equipped to provide high levels of passive safety for all occupants.

This starts with a strong, rigid body with clearly defined deformation zones that are designed to absorb impacts, ensuring maximum occupant protection. Aiding this is the standard fitment of six airbags – front and side for driver and front passenger and full length side curtain – three-point seatbelts for all five seating positions and two ISOFIX child restraint anchorages in the rear.

MINI has also considered pedestrian safety with the MINI 5-door featuring a partially active bonnet that, in the event of an accident, is raised to increase deformation space to help reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians.

All MINI 5-door models are available with a range of optional safety equipment that includes MINI Head-Up Display, Reversing Camera, Park Assist with front Park Distance Control, Adaptive LED headlights and a comprehensive Driving Assistant package.

The innovative Driving Assistant comprises a camera-based active cruise control and warning system that not only allows the MINI 5-door to be set to maintain a specific distance from the car ahead, also provides collision and pedestrian warnings with intial brake function and a high-beam assistant for the headlights.
